Greg and I started SDVW with Christina and Joe in 1994, mainly out of boredom, and the desire to play music that we wanted to hear.
We went through a number of line-up changes, and eventually cametogether with the "classic" membership roster: Morris, Smith, Oxley, Johnson, and Osorio.
We were best known for our great songwriting and often breathtaking live shows. We recorded a seven song CD at Rob McGregor's, "Seven Deadly Sins of SDVW" in 1998. We opened up Eddie C's for non-cover bands (thanks for all the bar tabs and loot, Ed-- I hear you don't pay bands shit these days) and played some damn good rock and roll.
Eventually, substance abuse, personality conflicts, and other shit lead to the demise of SDVW. Nothing as great as SDVW could last forever, and it's pretty amazing that we lasted as long as we did.
The title of "Greatest Rock-N-Roll Band in the World" changes hands nightly, and Sick Dick and the Volkswagens held it on at least six different occasions. We fucking rocked.
I was at this one SDVW show where Russ went off on the singer for using heroin before the show and blamed him for the band's lackluster performance that night. The next night I saw them again and they fucking rocked the house. I overheard Russ telling the singer how much better they were when he wasn't high on heroin. The funny thing is, I was partying with Mark on both nights, and I can guarantee that he was WAY higher the second night. I think they were more fun when Mark was drunk, though.

chancing upon a sick dick show late one night at the hardback was perhaps one of the best experiences of my 4.5 years in gainesville. even in that flat, cramped space they had a great presence. rock.

SDVW first gig was played at my graduation party December 1993. I moved in with Greg Smith and Joe Micheal, and was the band manager in 1994. They played many parties in the student ghetto with F (the band formerly known as The John Birch Society), and The Jeffersons. They won 2/3 battle of the band contests at the Hardback Cafe in 1994.
The sound is edgy surf rock, with political and punk lyrics. Today songs like "Kill the President" would get you thrown in jail for terrorism. Often, after a show, a confused conservative student would ask in disbelief, "did they really just sing a song called All Women Are Evil?" The attitude and animation of the band members delivered both entertainment and offense.
I gave Mark Morris my copy of "Seven Deadly Sins of SDVW" in 2000, after finding he lost his only copy of his own bands CD.
