In the fall of 1987, Paul Brey, Mark Underberger and I (with help from some other folks) promoted a three-nights-a-week local band event at the Hogsbreath Saloon. It ran for six weeks before we stopped, due to exhaustion. It was called the Hogslop Buffet. We tried to book two or three bands each night, and we got reasonably good turnout (maybe 50 people or more most nights) because there usually wasn't much else going on M-W, the nights we did the thing. One week we had a night with no bands booked, so we went to our fallback plan, having Cuddlefish play. For some reason, though, C'fish vocalist Mark Underberger wasn't available for the gig, so we went ahead without him. Paul, Greg, Rob and I rehearsed once (I think) and then played the gig. Practically no one showed up, but those who did had a... um, a memorable time. We played probably a half-dozen Cuddlefish songs -- I can't remember which ones. The stuff that sticks out in my mind are the covers -- We did a straight-up "Stairway to Heaven," which gave me a chance to do a reasonably sincere wank-a-rama guitar solo live onstage (after doing it, like, 12,000 times alone in my room in high school). We played "Eye of the Tiger" by Survivor and at the end we deliberately prolonged the outro thing where the band is going BOMP-dudda-BOMP-dudda-BOMP-dudda-BOMP and the idiot singer is saying "the eye of the tiger" over and over -- on the record that goes on for maybe 30 seconds, and we played that part for about 5 to 10 minutes. We also did "Born to Be Wild" with three, count 'em, THREE drum solos -- we'd get to the obvious place where there ought to be a drum solo, say "on the drums, Mr. Rob Kulicks," and then when he finished the drum solo we'd play the main riff four times and then do it all over again. Lather, rinse, repeat. I know there was at least one person whose life was somewhat affected -- Mike Hager (Number Two, Green Syndrome) had a friend named Wes who was visiting G'ville for the first time that day, and Enforcer was the first G'ville band he saw. He told me some months later that Enforcer helped convince him that Gainesville would be a good place to live. Oh yeah, our one and only gig took place the day the stock market crashed. Yippee.
