Is it true that Scotty raises Chiclids? I think it's sooo sexy when cute boys have a hobby. Does John McG really dye his hair cuz that's not cool. and Jack, did you save your dreadlocks when you cut them way back when cuz I will buy a chunk if you still got 'em.
How could a girl forget her first corn-holing? Booze. That's how! All I remember is John issuing a non-sequiter: "Jack-o, you're wack-o, brush your teeth or you'll get plaque-o." Then some or all of my orifices were filled with small things -nubbins I remember thinking- and then after some grunting and whimpering (John was crying) eventually seed was spilled in and around my person. I witnessed this magical scene through beer-goggles about a twelve-pack thick. After John puked I followed suit and we both passed out. The next morning, still drunk, John and I made out, John's Raviolios and Jameson still evident on his tongue and on his vintage checkered Vans. Years later, at a Seasick Sailors reunion gig, John asked me if I had a tampon and some Yoohoo and if I knew Jesus Gene. My answer: yes, yes and yes! John, if you still care contact me at 3502 L. Ron Hubbard Ave. suite # 7625 LA, CA 90027
Wow!
Reading the above account;
what more do you need to be a Gainesville legend in one's own mind? That and constant alcohol abuse. Sure is impressive Johnny Boy! Clean your trousers and join the revamped Bunnymen. I hear they need a new guitarist for their 80's dinosaurs of Goth festival gig.

Subject was the best band to come out of the late 80's early 90's Gainesville band scene. Incredible base and vocals.
Yeah, Subject rocked. Remember Jack's cute daughter, Emmaleah? I bet she is grown up now! Wow! Did Mark B. leave Gainesville? John was kind of an ass, but whatever, the band was great. I still have tapes and it makes me miss Gainesville and MFP.
Dear Robby, bass, as in the bass guitar, is spelled BASS. (Like the fresh water fish but pronounced differently.) BASE has several meanings, none of which refer to musical instuments.

Yep, we were all insane then. Some of us still are. Despite our attempts to thwart John's ever burgeoning fixation on the Bunnymen (and being Christ), I still enjoyed making music with these guys. Scotty now raises all kinds of fish. Jack, heard from him a while back, he was working on a documentary. John, no friggin idea.
I'm proud to say that I'm happily married to Mark Butler, the bass player from Subject. and Yes, GroupieDawn, he's left Gainsville. and I love that people still talk about Mark and the band! I know it makes my husband smile :) I wish I had known him back in the day...I would have loved to have heard him play live!

Lady Butler:
You got a good one. Mark was a true romantic. It took me 5 years to find another dreamy boy and I married him quick! They go fast!
He was great to know in the day, we were all so poor but I don't think we realized it...we just loved being young (dramatic sigh) hah hah
Subject was great, but I gotta tell you, Mark was right...John had a teensy Christ complex....Hey Mark..remember Falafel King?
Dawn
We were the best band Gainsville has ever seen or will see. But I'm sick of John getting all the credit for Subject. I wrote the songs and he just played the fancy parts.

Wrong sir Jackooof
you guys were the best in your own minds and that's all
I remember you as pissed off alcoholics with attitudes
Your daughter sure was cute and the saving grace of the idiocy.
While I will give you the fact that John got interesting 80's guitar sounds, the songs were not so there,
but then again,
were there any good "songwriters" in Gainesville at that time?
Best band Gvile will ever see? PULLEEASE!
You have to be making a joke right?
If not, I see the same ego posturing exists not than it ever did.
Humility goes a long way my friend.
You're probably just jealous because we were popular and whatever your shitty band was wasn't.

A Both Jack and John deserve much praise, but ah, the beautiful John McGuigan...Iggy Pop, Oscar Wilde and The Grinch all rolled up in one disgruntled marvel. Happy belated birthday, old man. I hope you are doing well.

Subject sucked.
Most people called them Reject. John is a great musician but insane. Jack is a poser skater rat who can't sing. The best thing about this band was Scotty. Possibly the most unoriginal band Gainesville has ever known. Duh. Bunnymen wannabees.
Everyone's personal tastes aside, I don't recall personally being a belligerent drunk. I do recall apologizing for the actions of the two front men while on some of their more notorious binges. In fact, twice I got yelled at by some random person, thinking I was Jack, because they had been previously and drunkenly accosted by said Mr. Odom. I did my fair share of other things though. And I agree with Rojo, but I'll take it a step further and say that all our drummers, which included Scotty and Greg Pierce, really made the most impact, for myself and the music. Scotty, I miss beating out rhythms with ya! Jack and John, it was that megalomaniacal egotism and attitude that always kept my one foot out the door.
Yay
The Subject bashing train has started again years later
Some things never change
Keep it up ya'll
Yeah, they pretty much sucked
actually mark was the only decent guy in the band, the others were all jackasses of the highest caliber.
I agree, Shelly, except for Scotty. I knew him way before he was with the band, and I had already left Gville by the time he started with them, but I thought he was always a really nice guy. In fact, he and my friend Felix secretly changed the outgoing message on our machine one time and it was weeks before we realized it. Some weird NWA sounding stuff! But funny! But you're right about Mark. He was a good guy.

John, I believe you are overdue to weigh in on this discussion. Get your complicated shoes and your thinking cap on and set the record straight.

to the band Subject,
i lived in gville for about three months and saw you guys open for the flaming lips , in my opinion , jack had a strong timbre on vocals and the overall band had an intense delivery that i found compelling , when the flaming lips started i left because my senses felt satisfied , it was a fine experience , and if music is available on cd to buy please let me know ,from paul living in Brazil , thanks Subject i was on your wavelength
obviously paul is on the lower evolutionary mediocre music scale. to say that subject was anywhere near the level of the Lips shows a severe lack of hootspa and any sort of integrity whatsoever. As for being on the wavelength, let us all take a moment of silence to laugh inwardly.
This is fucking hilarious. Subject was the most full of themselves bunch of assholes Gainesville has ever known. They were so sure they were going to be rock stars and they let everyone know it. I can't believe nobody has mentioned the imaginary Star Search gig yet. McWiggin' was pretty good at emulating Will Sergeant and certainly had the 'tude, but the sad truth is he's as crazy as a fucking loon. And really, they were nothing more than copycats. Jacko was a horse's ass with a weak chin and an even weaker voice. Hey "rock stars," we hope you enjoy serving pizza, b/c that's your lot in life.
their music was watery shit.
john and jack have tiny dicks.
Nancy has small weird boobs.

Subject was a great Hogtown band. Didn't want to be them, or screw them, just drink a beer or ten and listen, so any "attitude" was certainly lost on me. My "Gainesville Can't Dance" tape died a few years back - wish I had another. Mark, if you read this, drop me a line. Let's catch up.
I was a scrawny 18 year old when I first met up with the Subject guys in 1990. Had lots of fun getting in trouble with Mark and Scotty(they also liked to meet all the 18 year old girls that I knew)...and I was really thankful John didn't kick my ass one night when I puked on his leather jacket....I still play bass up here in NYC and now realize that I really was influenced by Subject (thanks!)....they were 10 years too early for the current post-punk revival (or ten years too late)

Worst Gville band ever......the word "talentless" pops quickly to mind. Pathetic, copy-cat tripe played by wanna-be goth losers (i.e., J & J). The whole town -- except a couple of sorority/frat-types -- absolutely despised them. Sorry, that's just the truth.
