Basically the only decent indepedant music venue in Gainesville from 1999 and on. Common Grounds has done a nice job combining the scenes that flourished previously (yet separately) at the Hardback and the Covered Dish. They also sported their own sort of post-rock scene (Mercury Program, Ithaca, Flight 121, Polline). Thay also let veteran bands have a home base again (I am think about long established bands like the 'Covered Dish Band' Squeaky and the 'Hardback band' Hot Water Music.) Like the people who ran those two before-mentioned venues, the crew at Common Grounds actually care about independant music. (This could be contrasted to the owners and management of the other current Gainesville venues :i.e. Eddie C's, the Palace, the Blowhole, etc.) Common Grounds has also kept Gainesville alive regarding famous touring indie and/or punk bands. Recently Common Grounds has hosted Johnathan Richman, Avail, Dismemberment Plan, Cursive, Atmosphere, Death Cab For Cutie, Eric Bachmann (of Archers of Loaf), and soon Frank Black. Sure, it is small, smoky, and hot as hell in the summer - but it is also the only venue in Gainesville that matters right now.

Now located at 210 SW 2nd Ave, the old Covered Dish location. Much bigger and better, complete with patio.
