I used to see Power play at the Winter Park Youth Center. Donnie Dumptruck was definitely one of my guitar heroes. Some of the songs I remember them playing were:
  • Johnny B Goode (Berry)
  • Heavy Day (Original?)
  • You're No Good (Dylan)
  • Gamblin Willie ("Ride, Willie, Ride")(Donnie did a fantastic lap steel solo on this one.)
  • New Days Ahead (Original - Also the name of Donnie's next band - managed by Morey Eisman(sp?))
  • Tell Me Straight Baby
I have some old cassette tapes of Power from the WPYC which I still listen to now and then. Great Band!

I also have a tape of Power made at the Orlando Youth Center and some photos of the band including a couple great ones of Donnie "Dumptruck" Hanna.

Great band!

Great band Power (later became New Days Ahead) but I am baffled why they are included as a Gainesville band. They were from the Lakeland/Winter Haven area, which is a long way from Gainesville.

Well, they played in Gainesville....one member, Danny Roberts, became a member of Mudcrutch...which was a Gainesville band.....I think they qualify to be a Gainesville band, an Orlando Band, a Lakeland Band, a Winter Park band.......whatever.....

Yea, they did get a bass player--for awhile they didn't even HAVE one and Donnie Hanna played a foot pedal bass...while he was playing lead, doing vocals AND harmonica parts...at that point it was keyboard, drums and Donnie doing everything. Friend of mine said he saw Danny Roberts not too long ago in Orlando and that he was back in the Lakeland area again. And before the nickname "Pressed Rat" ole JR was "Fast" Johnny Rhoades...Pressed Rat is a much more fitting nickname LOL.
Too bad you can't post pictures on this list...

I just dragged out one of what appears to be TWO tapes of Power The one I am currently listening to was made 25 Aug 1971 at the Orlando Youth Center and is labelled Set II. I know there is another tape of them somewhere in my junk. Considering the crude manner in which the tape was made (a small AIWA tape deck, a set of headphones and one mic strung across the floor and taped down to keep people from kicking it over) it's pretty darned good stuff! I got a buddy down the street with a studio--I may have to take this down and get him to burn it onto a CD for me...

On this tape are:
Tennessee Stud
Let Me Be
New Days Ahead/(not certain of title-this was actually a continued play of New Days Ahead)
Keep On Pushin' that Rock and Roll

I remember seeing Donnie Dumptruck in a band called Power back in Sarasota and then in Gainesville as New Days Ahead. I've always wondered what became of him as he truly impressed me. I don't remember much about the Sarasota show but at a well promoted gig on the university campus in Gainesville I remember he used a wine red SG and a white Fender piggy back bassman or something while kicking bass pedals, blowing harp on a rack, singing, and then teeter-totter dancing his way back and forth across the stage shaking a huge fro, playing slide you name it - he did it. I suspect the organ player may have also had bass pedals for times when Donnie would bounce around the stage larger than life. Did he keep his glass slide tied to a string up on the head stock for quick use ? I'd love to meet this fellow and try to steal some of his licks - maybe get him out to play in the area. Anyone with info on him please let me know. Gene Hardage A.K.A. Sarasota Slim 727-822-6615 http://www.SarasotaSlim.com
