The best Gainesville band since NDolphin by far. The end to this should have never been, and I enjoy almost every day the music created by these great people. I have about 4 videos of Space Masons/Jack Mason/NDolphin that I recorded live, and though the sound isn't the best, the memories are!!!
I believe I'm one of the lucky few who was able to experience the feeling and joy put off by this music. If it weren't for NDolphin, Aleka's Attic, Tom Miller, Jack Mason, Sumac, and The Space Masons I know my life would be missing something very important.

The Space Masons appeared in two versions: One was a five piece, whiich included all of the musicians listed here, but with only one of the bassists. Tom Miller (who played bass for NDolphin) had been involved with the band from the start - he contributed content to the "Space Masons Multimedia Extravaganza," which they performed two times on each of two nights. Eventually he replaced Brasgalla as bassist.
Soon after Miller assumed this spot, the band also began appearing as a trio, with Jack, Heath, and Tom playing most of the same songs, plus a few new ones. Rowan and Chalmers were absent. The band played several more shows as a five-piece, but the shows began to get noticeably shorter, and the band no longer came out for encores. This can be explained by Rowan's growing disinterest with performing - eventually he left the band along with Chalmers, who at the time was his girlfriend (I don't know if they are still together or if this last statement is even true, but it was what everyone was saying at the time).
Following Rowan's departure the band played several more shows as a trio. Space Masons was a great band from the start in five-piece form. As a trio the first few shows really missed the warmth of Kim's astounding violin backing, but after some live work and some excellent new songs (not to mention the return of Miller, which was great for the sound), the trio really melded into a great band. The last show that they played that I was aware of was at the Covered Dish on New Year's eve, 1995 (12/31/94).
Th only live material I have from this band, sadly, is the recording of "The Edge" that Jack added to the Covered Dish-produced CD "One Foot in the Grove." I understand that there was a tape sold locally at one point; I never saw it or I would have bought several. If anyone has any recordings of any of these shows, I would do just about anything to hear them! Email me!
And if Jack Mason is out there, anywhere, reading this, I hope he's still writing music. His two bands were really special to me and to a lot of other people. It seemed that whatever Jack was working on had a little extra flair to it, the touch of genius, perhaps. I know the two bands of his that I loved fell apart - but they were both great, and I hope he never quit creating.
I remember the multi-media slid show extravaganza at Full Circle. What a night!
