Slime was a fun band, featuring future Yardapes Phil and Tom
Legrone and local semi-legend Russ Avery (one-time Roach Motel bassist).
They had songs like "Mucus Milkshake" (one of the best song titles ever)
and "Sophisticated Cancer," about a preppy girl named Muffy who gets the
Big C and expires. They used to practice in the same block of warehouses
as Paragon, a couple doors down -- this was in the industrial park out near
the intersection of 441 and NW 34th Street. Paul, Mark, and I thought they
were okay, but the guys in Paragon absolutely hated them and would curse
and insult them right to their faces -- you'd have thought there was a
communist puppy-crushing collective operating in that warehouse the way
those guys would bitch and moan. I can remember at least one evening when
a couple of Paragonians were performing flying side-kicks at the (closed)
Slime warehouse door as Slime attempted to practice. One of the reasons
for the animosity was that the electrical breaker for the entire block
would blow if both bands played at one time, and of course the high-minded
members of Paragon felt that perfecting Van Halen covers was a much more
worthwhile pursuit that playing "faggot punk-rock SHIT," so they resented
having to take turns with Slime. Eventually Slime broke up and didn't even
leave a commercial demo tape in their wake, though they have an unreleased
one out there somewhere.
The same warehouse block was later occupied by the likes of Psychic
Violents, The Doldrums, Butter The Heifer, The Yardapes, Boogerhead (the
only place Boogerhead ever played, as a matter of fact), Turbo Satan, and
Big Soul.
"Mucus Milkshake" was a Twisted Logic song; I didn't know Slime ever covered it. The two bands did play at least one show together in the Weaver dorm recreational room.
